"On June 1, 1966, farm workers in Rio Grande City went on strike against Starr County growers demanding a minimum wage of $1.25 and better working conditions...The farm workers strike evolved in to a larger movement to pass a minimum wage bill through the Texas State Legislature. On July 4, 1966, The Minimum Wage March began the arduous 490-mile journey from Rio Grande City to Austin."
